Palworld, the game that's a bit like Pokémon but with a survival crafting twist, is not just a solo adventure. It's got a multiplayer side, though it can be a bit tricky. Unlike some games, there's no player versus player action here. Instead, you team up with pals to build big bases and tackle tough enemies, but some parts of the game stay solo.
But let's be honest, games are way more fun with buddies. So, here's the lowdown on how multiplayer and crossplay, or lack thereof, works in Palworld.
How to Play Multiplayer in Palworld
Playing with friends is cool, and Palworld lets you do that. You can either be the host or join your friends in a personal save file (up to four players), or you can hop into a dedicated server (up to 32 players). To join a personal save file, grab the invite code from the host player's options and input it. If the code isn't showing, the host might need to flick the multiplayer switch in the world settings. Oh, and each time you start a new game, you'll need to share the fresh invite code.
For dedicated servers, you can choose to join public ones, host your own, or pay for a hosting website (I go for the last one – it's just easier). But, here's the catch, dedicated servers are only on Steam right now. So, if you want more than four pals in a game, Steam it is.
How Multiplayer Works in Palworld
Multiplayer in Palworld is a bit different from the regular solo game. Check this out:
- You and your pals can team up to take down tower bosses like Zoe and Grizzbolt.
- Guilds are like parties, and only guild members can help with your base. So, if your friends have dreams of building their bases, they need their own guild.
- When you bite the dust, you lose all your Pals along with your gear.
- Exploring the world is a solo gig. Each player has to map out and find fast travel points on their own.
- Loot isn't personal; it's for the world. If you snag a chest or a shiny Pal Sphere, your pals can't grab it.
Now, our dedicated server hit some bumps not there in solo play. Weird stuff like struggling to jump up cliffs without tumbling and item counts going wonky during building. But hey, Palworld's in early access, so a few glitches are par for the course.
Crossplay in Palworld? Nope.
Thinking of teaming up with Xbox buddies while you're on Steam? Sorry, not happening. Palworld on Xbox and Palworld on Steam can't play together. Even the Xbox Game Pass PC version can't join the Steam party. If you're aiming for a joint game night, it's either everyone on Steam or everyone on Xbox.
The folks at Pocketpair say they're working on crossplay, so fingers crossed!
Palworld on PS5? Maybe.
PlayStation 5 players, listen up. There are no launch plans for Palworld on PS5, but the developers at Pocketpair might think about it as they go along.
