Getting noticed on Google search results has become a real struggle, and websites are trying all kinds of tricks, like using SEO tactics and flooding results with affiliate links.
Despite search engines, including Google, trying hard to fight against this SEO spam, it seems they're having a tough time keeping up. A recent study has exposed a decline in the quality of Google's search results, sparking criticism for the internet giant.
Gizmodo reports that even though Google claims they've improved the search experience, researchers from Leipzig University, Bauhaus-University Weimar, and the Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence found otherwise. Their study focused on 7,392 product-review search terms on Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo, revealing a concerning trend. Google's top pages were all about optimization, loaded with more affiliate links and showing lower-quality text. This issue is linked to the rise of affiliate marketing, where websites use product reviews to make money through special links leading to big retailers like Amazon, BestBuy, and Walmart.
The battle for attention on Google search results is heating up, with websites using different SEO tactics. Sadly, some are resorting to shady methods, harming the overall quality of content. Despite efforts to fight SEO spam, search engines, Google included, are struggling to stay ahead, as the study points out.
While Google fared better compared to Bing and DuckDuckGo, the seriousness of the problem can't be ignored. A Google spokesperson defended the company, mentioning improvements made over the past year and the overall quality of search results for billions of daily queries. However, the study suggests that the changes made by search engines only offered temporary relief, as spammers keep finding new ways to exploit the system.
Lily Ray, the senior director of SEO and head of Organic Research at Amsive Digital, is concerned about Google's current state. Despite recognizing the company's efforts to address issues, Ray and the SEO community see a kind of chaos within Google's search functionality.
"Google has been getting better in certain ways, but in others, it's getting worse," said Ray.
Even though Google handles billions of searches daily, worries persist about its declining performance. Gizmodo recently reported a strange situation where a search about former president John F Kennedy's stance on the death penalty showed a child's homework assignment. It adds to the growing belief that Google is facing serious problems.
The study also points out Google's increasing dependence on user-generated content, making it an easy target for manipulation by spammers. In response, users are adding "Reddit" to their searches to find genuine, community-driven content. This raises concerns about the sustainability of current practices in the internet economy, where Google holds a central role.
As Google deals with these challenges, the SEO industry is getting louder about its concerns.
Lily Ray summed up the feelings, saying, "I don't understand how anybody in the SEO industry is doing anything other than complaining about Google right now." The study emphasizes the need for ongoing watchfulness and improvements to maintain the honesty and quality of online search results.
